What do I mean by breeder criteria?
This page will outline what responsible breeders should be doing to help you get a healthy, well bred golden retriever.

Question to ask yourself & the breeder

Description

Spiritrider Kennel Policy

Do they belong to a dog club?

If they are not active, hoe can they know if their dogs are within standard. They must be in it for the betterment of the breed firstly.

We belong to provincial & national clubs, train & compete in various events. I am webmaster & director for GRCA. On several email breed specific lists for current information.

How long have they been in business?

If they have only been breeding for 5 years & have 20+ dogs, they are probably in it for the money.

We have owned GR since 1994 & bred 7 litters in 16 years.

Will they answer any question you have about puppies training?

Do they have their puppies on a development schedule?

We have an extensive exposure program that involves many situations.
Check puppy page on website for more.

Can you meet the sire & dam?

Some of the times this is nice, however they should be looking for the best match, so rarely do they have both on site.

Mostly we find the best dog in the country for our girls and make breeding arrangements to accommodate .

Should the puppy be registered?

It is against the law in Canada to sell a puppy as “purebred” without papers. Don’t stand for it!

All our pups are microchipped & registered with the Canadian kennel Club upon our contract completion.

Are both parents at least 18 months old?

Ages for clearances: OVC 18 months,OFA-24mths,CERF-every year, Heart –over 1 year of age.

Girls must be 2 years & cleared. Boys must be 18 months & cleared but this is still very young & unproven in our opinion.

What should I look for in the pedigrees?

Many bad kennels hide their pedigrees to hide issues such as inbreeding or that parents are from puppy mills.

All our dogs’ pedigrees are posted on our website & K9DATA.COM where you will find lineage & health clearances.

Do both parents have OVC,OFA or Pennhip

The x-rays must be sent to certified experts in Can. Or US. “My vet cleared them” is just not good enough!

We do OVC or OFA on heart, elbows & hips to ensure they are clear of hereditary issues.

Do both parents have current eye clearances?

These should be done yearly by a certified Opthamologist

We have all our dogs done yearly.

How often is the female bred?

This depends on age, health & number of puppies

Two in a row is rare here.

Is the health warranty at least 1 year?

Most breeders only stay in it for 5 years, so they are not around to honour a warranty.

We offer a 2 year written guarantee .

Is the puppy registered with the Canadian Kennel Club non-breeding contract?

All pet puppies should be “fixed” Show puppies should be cleared before breeding. They should have a fine for breaking their contract.

As well as the CKC non-breeding contract, it is in our written contract. Our contracts are void if a dog is bred without permission, & we will pursue legal action for a minimum of $10,000.

Do they inbreed, linebreed or outcross?

Inbreed: brother to sister, mother to son, father to daughter. Linebreeding: a grandfather or grandmother in common. Outcross: no relation

We never inbreed.
We sometimes linebreed.
We outcross almost all litters.

What age should the puppy be before leaving the kennel?

Responsible breeders will not let puppies go before 7 weeks of age. Critical to social development!

Ours may leave at eight weeks or more if traveling a long distance.

What type of inoculation are given? Deworming?

Following minimum vaccination:
Canine Distemper,Parvovirus,Parainfluenza
Wormed

All our pups are done before they leave.

Are they open & easy to talk to?

Will they give you their vet’s name?

Cedarwood Vet Clinic-Red Deer-Dr. Hubbard,Dr.Schouten Greenbank Vet –Edmonton-Dr.Greenbank

Have the puppies been temperament tested?

If all they do is one test on one day it is not valid. They must be very involved & knowledagble.

Our pups are raised in the house & kennel. We spend hours & do extensive work with them See website for more info. On the puppy page.

Are the puppies cheaper as they get older or “on sale”?

Big Red Flag!-Breeders who are committed do not do this. They are trying to dump puppies.

Our show prospects kept back go into our started dog program & do not sell for less.

What are the price of the pups?

Reputable breeders do not sell for $200-$600

Our pups sell for $1200. Dogs from our started dog program sell for more.

Do they have anything to do with pups beside “playing” with them?

Breeders are concerned about social development & should be knowledable in how to foster it

We do do extensive work with our pups while raising them. Please see our puppy info page for more details. It is my commitment & job!

Will the breeder take the puppy back if things don’t work out?

Most reputable breeders should! If they are a one time breeder or backyard breeder they will not!

It is written in our contract that we are notified first of a situation in order to rehome.
